Wireless vs. wired conundrum is an interested topic to be covered. in 5S we want to make sure that everything is simple. All the arrangement is made to help us use the item or product. A series of non complicated movement. We want to have a flow when we do 5S. That is the most important idea if anybody were to use 5S as a method to improve their life at home or in the office. There are many things that could be done with the 5S concept. But, the ideas is still the same 5 basic steps. A flow process. An approach that have been certified and confirmed to work in the industry, thus it should work even at home and in the office. Check out why WiFi weak in my previous post.

Wireless

When we talk about wireless, what we mean here is without wire. Everything system that moves through the air. Bluetooth, WIFI, 3G, 4G, 5G, Mifi, Radar, Lidar are all wireless system. I am not going to cover all them. The main things at home is WIFI, Bluetooth and the 4G or 5G. And yes, I forget the satellite network. Latest, it seem that space X is trying to build a low orbit satellite which would help to have world wide internet. Now home internet is in a hot spot. Our mobile network is in a triangle.

But, what has it to do with 5S. If you are living in an apartment. The home wireless network should cover the whole house. Like mine, living in a 850 square feet apartment, the wireless network covers the whole house. But, once I move to a double story house, of 1500 square feet, then the arrangement need to be different. There is a need either to have a wired connection from 1st floor to 2nd floor and vice versa. Else, another choice is to have a WIFI booster or repeater. The choice is ours. I have covered this before. Personally for me, I prefer to have wired connection which is stable. That require a bit of hacking or arrangement for my wires.

But, if you would prefer a clean look, then wireless is the best. For my PC, all are wireless – mouse, keyboard, speaker, webcam. This create a minimalist design.

Wired

Going back to wired design. This is also a good idea to use. Wired as explain earlier is more stable. Therefore, it create a less maintenance havoc. Which is important when we want to reduce the minor defect. There is an advantage of having a wired system – stable, no batter and better connection.

However, this creates a problem as well such as messy due to wires, intermittent cable issue and difficulty to share. In the end, it is a personal preference to choose wired or wireless.

My personal view is for most cases, we will use a hybrid arrangement. The communication is mainly using wireless – 5S, Bluetooth etc, and power is using wired. Yes, there is a battery, but the life is usually short. In addition, it depends on how are you arranging your life or your life style.

  • Dedicated desk vs. hot desking
  • Single story house vs. multi story house
  • Size and coverage of house
  • Urban vs. rural
  • Technical capability of the person

Therefore, we could determine your wired vs. wireless conundrum. I would proposed the following:

WiredWireless
Dedicated DeskHot Desking
Multi StoreySingle Storey
More than 1000 square feetLess than 100 square feet
UrbanRural
